At Coach REALTORS®, our real estate agents know curb appeal when they see it. The Pepsi-Cola sign in Long Island City is one of our hometown's favorite head-turners, lighting up the East River with its neon red letters. The sign is a beloved part of the Queens waterfront area does a great job making its neighborhood feel more distinct. But do you know the history behind the billboard that beckons Long Islanders home?
An iconic throwback that waves "hi" to Manhattan every night, the Pepsi-Cola sign is the perfect welcome if you live on Long Island. It's also a point of pride with deep roots in local industry and art. Here's what you need to know about the Pepsi-Cola sign:
The original sign looked a little different… because it was a different sign. The sign has had a few different looks and homes since it was first erected. In 1936, Pepsi installed the Art Deco billboard on the rooftop of their Hunters Point bottling plant. When they modernized their logo with a single dash in 1942, the sign changed too. And when they redesigned their bottles in the 1970s, they also redesigned the hand-painted metal bottle on the sign, which originally had a bottle cap with a 5-cent price tag.
Unfortunately, a winter storm did serious damage in 1992, after decades of neon outages, electrical problems, and corrosion. After an extensive rebuild, a reconstructed version was back in place two years later, complete with new paint and primer for the support structure, new ruby red curlicue letters, and a brand new bottle that faithfully replicated the details of the original. Finally, when Pepsi closed and sold their plant in 1998, they had a stipulation: the sign would have to be part of any new construction.
Long Island neighborhoods are constantly evolving, but sometimes New York history doesn't clear the way for new real estate. When developers picked the site of the Pepsi-Cola sign for a new 25-story apartment tower, the city, and the Landmarks Preservation Commission made sure they kept their promise and modified their plans to accommodate it.
The sign now backs up to the building, which is hollowed out behind it to create a "shadow box" effect and keep the first eight floors of apartments at a safe distance. Today, its front yard is scenic Gantry Plaza State Park, a riverfront recreational area with 12 acres of gardens, piers, athletic courts, and one more restored piece of the area's industrial past. Namesake gantries, originally used to load and unload rail cars from barges, are the perfect complement for the historic Pepsi-Cola sign on the far end of the park.
Whether you want to live behind the Pepsi-Cola sign or find your next family home somewhere else on Long Island, our real estate team at Coach REALTORS® can help. Contact us to learn more about buying or selling a home here in New York.

At Coach Realtors, we live, work, and play in many of the same Long Island communities where we do business. So the health of local communities and their residents is an important priority, especially during the holiday season. This year, we are partnering with the Pajama Program throughout the holidays, to help bring a good night's sleep to children in Long Island communities. Our real estate agents have the details on what the Pajama Program is all about, and how you can pitch in to help provide a healthy night's sleep to area children.
Now through December 1, help us bring joy to the children in our communities by bringing unused pajamas and books to your local Coach Realtors office. The Pajama Program has a simple mission: Good Nights Are Good Days. The program was founded by Genevieve Piturro, who discovered during visits to local shelters that the children didn't have pajamas or books to enjoy before bed. The charity has been growing ever since, with Pajama Program chapters located in every state across the country.
The catchy slogan of the Pajama Program speaks to the genuine need for children to enjoy a healthy night's sleep, and to have the energy, comfort, and confidence to approach the next day. Imagine being a child, not knowing what pajamas are, and not having a story to read before going to bed? Sleeping in a shelter, with little in the way of bedtime comfort or personal space, can make having the energy to get through school each day a real challenge.
From humble beginnings with a bag of new pajamas and children's books, the Pajama Program continues its mission to bring a good night's sleep to children throughout the country. The program is supported by the hard work of volunteers, many of whom have already devoted their professional lives to working with children.
The Pajama Program also relies on local organizations across the country, like Coach Realtors, to set up pajama and book drives for children. We're proud to play our part in the process, and we'll be accepting donations at our offices from now through December 1, 2018. Bring unused pajamas and books to your local Coach Realtors office, and we'll handle the rest. The holiday season is an excellent time to donate to a worthy cause, and what could be a better gift than a good night's sleep? Pajamas and bedtime stories provide comfort to children, no matter their background, and a good night's sleep is one of the keys to a successful day. Your donation can help local Long Island kids approach each day with confidence.

As a busy, thriving metropolis, one of the most important aspects of New York City and its surrounding areas is the local metro systems. Taxis, buses, subways, and trains - NYC has them all. Our real estate agents recommend that anyone living in or interested in moving to the Long Island area be well-acquainted with the various metro services NYC has to offer. These services include the main intercity railroad station in NYC, Penn Station.
For residents and potential future residents of Long Island, Pennsylvania Station - or Penn Station, as most know it - stands as one of the critical transportation locations with which to become familiar. Penn Station represents the busiest transportation hub in the entirety of the Western Hemisphere.
With 21 railway tracks fed by seven tunnels and three concourses for travel, Penn Station is one of the go-to options for both intercity and interstate travel. There are individual concourses for Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road (often abbreviated to LIRR), and New Jersey Transit services. Penn Station also connects New York to Washington, D.C., Boston, Philadelphia, and several intermediate points.
In 2017, Penn Station opened its West End Concourse as well, allowing passengers to enter the station and board their trains using the historic James A. Farley Post Office on 8th Avenue. This is part of a larger plan, overseen by New York Governor Cuomo, to modernize and renovate Penn Station - a change that would be greatly appreciated by modern commuters.
With more than 650,000 daily commuters flowing in and out of Penn Station, it's important to know a few things about the station. For one, the station is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The general consensus on the best way to reach the station is to take the closest subway or bus - avoid driving or taking a cab (but then, most NYC natives do that already!).
If you need to grab a bite to eat while you're at the station, top recommendations seem to be that the Shake Shack is the best place to grab some grub inside Penn Station. There's also The Pennsy, a thriving food hall on the corner outside the station, as well as Rose's Pizza at Penn Plaza.
Our best tip is to take the time to stop by Penn Station as soon as possible. Familiarizing yourself with the rails, you might be using may save you some time (and confusion) on down the line! Of course, Penn Station offers maps throughout its three concourses and plenty of signage to point the way. Aside from rubbing shoulders with the other commuters, you shouldn't have too many problems figuring out where you need to go when the time comes.
New York City stands as one of the largest, thriving metropolitan areas in the world - a crossroads for people from all walks of life, and the cultural, financial, and media capital of the world. For those of us drawn to the hustle and bustle of urban life, NYC stands as the best representative of city life.
If you're a homeowner or prospective buyer interested in the Long Island area, then be sure to contact us and see what we can do for you! Our professionals at Coach Realtors are always happy to help a new client meet their real estate goals!

There's nothing like New York City excitement. NYC has 24/7 art, culture, and entertainment, but sometimes you just need a moment of peace. Our real estate agents recommend Gantry Plaza State Park. It's a city oasis in Long Island City that's close enough for you to enjoy a moment of peace and get right back to the action.
Gantry Plaza State Park is a peaceful green space that's perfect for a mid-city escape. The 12-acre park curves along the banks of the East River in Long Island City, Queens. Since its opening in 1998, the developers have transformed the park in stages to include activities and facilities for everyone.
Gantry Park offers traditional park amenities in a city setting. You'll find spaces for picnicking, organized sports, evening concerts and more. You can follow the curved steps down to the waterfront plaza. There you can sit quietly and look out over the river to a panoramic New York City skyline view. If you bring your fishing gear, you can claim a spot along one of four piers and cast your line into the river.
The park's location was once an abandoned dockyard and industrial site. Instead of tossing aside its past, Gantry Plaza State Park honors its once-thriving industrial roots. Two refurbished gantries give the park its name and a historical focal point. The structures were built in 1925 to help dock workers unload goods from railway cars and load them onto New Jersey-bound barges.
The bright red, four-story Pepsi-Cola neon sign is a national landmark and an essential element of Gantry Park's personality. The original sign was placed on top of the company's bottling plant in 1940. After decades of transitions and deterioration, Pepsi reproduced the sign in 1993. Despite the reproduction sign's young age, the Landmarks Preservation Commission gave it landmark status.
The Pepsi-Cola sign and the gantries are unmistakable waterfront landmarks. Together, they make Gantry Park stand out when viewed from either side of the river.
Gantry Park is a great location for families that want a park with more than a fabulous view. There's pier fishing, Adirondack chairs for lounging, and picnic tables for casual outdoor dining. The playgrounds provide child-friendly fun, and the park's playing fields are available for organized sports.
Gantry Plaza State Park hosts a schedule of events and concerts. Visit the New York Parks website for information on Fishing Fridays, Live at Gantries, and other upcoming events.
As with most New York State Parks, Gantry Plaza State Park visitors must pay a vehicle access fee. If you have an Empire Pass card, you qualify for entrance to Gantry Park, other New York State Parks, and State Department of Environmental Conservation venues.
When you schedule a group picnic, you must pay a fee based on the number in the group. You must apply for a permit to conduct a wedding photo shoot or other photo or video production. Teams must apply for a permit to use park playfields.
New York living can be exciting as long as you know the best places to go when you need to slow down. Our real estate professionals can help. Contact Coach REALTORS® when you're buying or selling a home in Long Island City or if you want to know more about the communities we serve.

While finding the perfect Long Island home for you is our priority at Coach REALTORS®, we also want you to discover all that the area has to offer. For a fun-filled day, our REALTORS® leave your cares behind and head out to Coney Island and Luna Park where adventure awaits in this iconic amusement venue which was inspired by the original 1903 park.
Coney Island is legendary, in part because of its history as the place to go for a day of fun, food, and thrills. With the original Luna Park being one of three amusement parks established in the early twentieth century on Coney Island, its newer namesake embodies all the excitement of years gone by with modern touches and attractions. Although the original park was devastated by fire in 1944, visitors will find that today's Luna Park and Coney Island are reminiscent of its glorious past. The Parachute Jump ride--once nearly everyone's favorite--is no longer in service, but the attraction still stands, now covered in thousands of LED lights. The new Thunderbolt coaster pays homage to the classic wooden coaster that served up thrills to park guests for decades, and visitors of all ages will delight in riding the beautifully restored B & B Carousell.
For guests who are looking for over-the-top thrills, Luna Park makes the grade with rides like the Coney Island Cyclone, Zenobio, and the Sling Shot. Feel the wind in your face as you take a ride on the Steeplechase, another of the park's classic thrill rides with ties to its past, and get your adrenaline pumping as you climb aboard the Coney Clipper. If less intense attractions are more your taste, rides like the Circus Coaster and Lynn's Trapeze are sure to please. Younger riders will love the Mermaid Parade and Speed Boat rides. At Luna Park, you'll also find plenty of midway type games that bring back the nostalgia of a summer carnival. Try your luck at one or all, and bring back a fun prize as a souvenir.
All the excitement you'll find at Coney Island's Luna Park might cause you to work up an appetite. You'll find plenty of mouthwatering treats throughout the park from savory and satisfying to refreshingly sweet. Enjoy delicious seafood offerings at Place to Beach, and don't miss the original Feltman's of Coney Island for the ultimate hot dog experience. Cool down with a creamy scoop from Coney's Cones or indulge with a treat from Fried Delights. You'll make so many great memories when you spend the day at Luna Park, and Thunderbolt Retail captures them in photos that you can take with you. Purchase souvenirs and trinkets at the Cyclone Shop and Last Stop Coney Island to remember your day.

Some people move to Oyster Bay for the quiet. Some move here to be near the seashore. And others for the history. In fact, historic homes for sale in Oyster Bay are popular. And often disappear from the local housing market as quickly as they enter. However, one historic home sure to remain an icon in the Oyster Bay community is Sagamore Hill, the former home of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States.
Sagamore Hill is a national treasure waiting to be explored and enjoyed. Congress established it as the Sagamore National Historic Site to preserve the house as a part of the National Park Service. It was soon after listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The house is a must-see for Nassau County residents and visitors and is a source of pride for the community.
Our REALTORS® are excited to tell you about the history of Sagamore Hill and Oyster Bay and can't wait to show you homes for sale in Long Island.
History Unfolds at Sagamore Hill
When you step onto the grounds of Sagamore Hill, it's easy to leave your everyday life behind as history begins to unfold around you. The home itself is the centerpiece of the estate, having been the residence of Theodore Roosevelt from 1885 until the former President's death in 1919. While he was in office, Roosevelt's "Summer White House" was the site of several peace talks and visits from foreign dignitaries.
An Inside Look at Roosevelt's Legacy
Touring Sagamore Hill gives you a glimpse into the life of Theodore Roosevelt, the acclaimed political figure and the charismatic man. One of the highlights of the tour, the North Room showcases many of Roosevelt's prized trophy heads, animal skin rugs and gifts presented to him by various heads of state. You'll also find a collection of thousands of books and a diverse assortment of art acquired by Roosevelt throughout the home. The Queen Anne style home still has original furnishings and decor in its 23 rooms and underwent a meticulous renovation a few short years ago. Guided tours of Sagamore Hill are available for a small admission fee; you'll want to stop by the visitor center and bookstore during your visit.
Explore the Grounds

Fire Island Lighthouse is located at the western point of Fire Island and is open to the public for tours and special events. For many visitors, the highlight of touring the lighthouse is climbing the tower, where you can look out upon a beautiful ocean vista from the barrier island. If you visit when the skies are clear, you'll likely be able to see the New York City skyline. Visitors are treated to several interactive areas in the Keeper's Quarters, detailing the importance of the landmark in local maritime history. Step inside the lighthouse keeper's daily routine, and learn just how demanding their way of life has been throughout history. See actual lenses that have been used in the lighthouse in the new Lens Building, and stop by the Boathouse where you'll find life-saving equipment and a surf boat on display.
As part of the National Park Service, Fire Island offers visitors a diverse and beautiful span of nature to explore in addition to the lighthouse. There are plenty of open spaces to enjoy on the barrier island, and ranger-guided tours can be arranged to experience the seashore, forests, and salt marshes of Fire Island.
While visiting Fire Island Lighthouse, you'll discover its rich history and the important role it has played in keeping both travelers and sailors safe throughout the years. The current lighthouse was built in the mid-19th century, replacing an older, smaller version, and was lit for the first time in late 1858. The lighthouse played a crucial role in guiding ships into the New York Harbor as they arrived from Europe, often being the first visible landmark to immigrants on board, and was in service until 1973.
Bring the family and discover the story and surroundings at Fire Island Lighthouse. Tours are available daily for a small admission fee. Be sure to stop by the gift shop before you leave for unique souvenirs that the kids will love.
