Planting a butterfly garden has many rewards. Chief among them, of course, are visitations by these extravagantly beautiful fluttering insects that all of us, from children and upwards, delight in. But there's also the enjoyment you'll feel at creating an attractively landscaped garden with interesting plants and eye-catching colors and foliage.
Perhaps the biggest reward, however, is that you'll be helping butterflies in the area of Nassau county homes for sale and Suffolk County homes for sale by way of countering some of the hardships that are besetting these fascinating insects nationwide: principally, loss of habitat.
Before launching your butterfly garden, visit some local nurseries and talk to a staff member knowledgeable in local butterflies and their needs. You might also go to a local public butterfly garden such as Floral Park Centennial Garden, where an expert can advise you on local plants for your garden.
When you visit a nursery, you'll see a wide variety of plants labeled "butterfly attractor" or "butterfly plant." Many of these plants, such as members of the Buddleia genus, are great butterfly-attracting plants. The problem with some of them is that they are non-native and have become invasive since being introduced to the United States. So if at all possible, concentrate on acquiring native plants. These are plants that butterflies from this region evolved with and find most nourishing.
Then, there's the matter of choosing pollen-bearing plants for energy and planting other species for caterpillar food. Flowers are, of course, the main source of nectar, which helps migratory butterflies such as monarchs make their way to warmer climates in the winter. But the flowering nectar plants will be different from the plants you plant for caterpillar food. The latter are plants that will attract the butterfly when seeking to lay eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the caterpillars eat the leaves, then turn into a chrysalis and, eventually, a butterfly. Both types of plants are recommended for creating a well-balanced butterfly garden.
Of course, the plants you choose will also depend on the conditions in your yard. Choose a sunny, open spot (dappled shade in part of the garden is OK) for best results. Among the plants you might try:
A word about milkweed: there are several milkweed species, but it's best if you plant those native to our area. Milkweed is an important plant for migratory monarch butterflies in particular, whose decline has been partially attributed to destruction of milkweed in fields and due to development.
Some non-native plants that are butterfly attractors and do well in our area are alyssum, lantana, petunias, and zinnias.
You can plant such herbs as parsley and dill and fennel and sage for caterpillar food.
Vary your plantings, including annuals and perennials, as well as bushes, shrubs, and vines. Butterflies and caterpillars need protection from predators, such as birds. Yes, we love birds, but they do eat insects, so give your butterflies a break by planting your garden near a bush or tree where they can shelter. A shallow pan with damp gravel or rocks will be helpful to provide moisture and minerals.

Did you know gardening is a great way to relieve stress? This is one of the reasons why it's becoming extremely popular. In fact, many potential homebuyers tell our REALTORS® that a yard large enough for a garden is one of the features they really want in their new home.
If you're not ready to plant a large backyard garden just yet, consider starting with a simple herb garden. You can easily grow herbs either outdoors or indoors in pots. If you've been considering buying a new home, starting a container garden is a great idea. This way, you can start now and take it with you when you move.
To get your herb garden started, follow these simple tips.
The most important part of starting an herb garden is choosing the right location. Most herbs do well in an area that gets full sun. Before you plant your herbs, watch the area for a few days to ensure that it gets at least 4hours of full sun each day.
If you're going to plant your herbs outdoors, make sure you leave enough distance between the plants so they have room to grow. Generally, you'll need 1 to 4 feet of space between each plant depending on the type of herb you're growing.
For a container garden, you'll want to choose large pots and place them in a warm spot that gets at least 4 hours of full sun each day. A deck, patio, or a corner of your yard are all great options, as long as they get enough sun.
If you're planting your herbs in the yard, you'll want to remove the grass, turn the soil, and use a large garden fork to loosen it up. This is an important step because loose dirt is better able to drain water and will make it easier for the plant's roots to grow. You should also consider adding compost to the soil. This will help with water drainage and act as a fertilizer.
To start your container garden, you'll need a high-quality potting soil and fertilizer. Once you've added both to the pot, simply add some water until the soil feels moist and you're ready to plant your herbs.
The last step is to choose which herbs you want to grow. Think about the types of foods you enjoy cooking and the herbs that will compliment them the best.
Some of the best herbs for beginner gardeners include:
Make sure you choose plants that look strong and healthy. Then simply plant them in the dirt and wait for them to grow.
You'll want to keep an eye on your herb garden and water it whenever the dirt a few inches below the plant feels dry. Make sure you actually check the soil before you water because over-watering can cause the plants to rot.
When the plants grow to about 6 to 8 inches, you can start to harvest them. Don't cut more than 1/3 of the branches and try to cut them close to a leaf intersection. This will help the plant grow back faster.

At Coach REALTORS®, our real estate agents know curb appeal when they see it. The Pepsi-Cola sign in Long Island City is one of our hometown's favorite head-turners, lighting up the East River with its neon red letters. The sign is a beloved part of the Queens waterfront area does a great job making its neighborhood feel more distinct. But do you know the history behind the billboard that beckons Long Islanders home?
An iconic throwback that waves "hi" to Manhattan every night, the Pepsi-Cola sign is the perfect welcome if you live on Long Island. It's also a point of pride with deep roots in local industry and art. Here's what you need to know about the Pepsi-Cola sign:
The original sign looked a little different… because it was a different sign. The sign has had a few different looks and homes since it was first erected. In 1936, Pepsi installed the Art Deco billboard on the rooftop of their Hunters Point bottling plant. When they modernized their logo with a single dash in 1942, the sign changed too. And when they redesigned their bottles in the 1970s, they also redesigned the hand-painted metal bottle on the sign, which originally had a bottle cap with a 5-cent price tag.
Unfortunately, a winter storm did serious damage in 1992, after decades of neon outages, electrical problems, and corrosion. After an extensive rebuild, a reconstructed version was back in place two years later, complete with new paint and primer for the support structure, new ruby red curlicue letters, and a brand new bottle that faithfully replicated the details of the original. Finally, when Pepsi closed and sold their plant in 1998, they had a stipulation: the sign would have to be part of any new construction.
Long Island neighborhoods are constantly evolving, but sometimes New York history doesn't clear the way for new real estate. When developers picked the site of the Pepsi-Cola sign for a new 25-story apartment tower, the city, and the Landmarks Preservation Commission made sure they kept their promise and modified their plans to accommodate it.
The sign now backs up to the building, which is hollowed out behind it to create a "shadow box" effect and keep the first eight floors of apartments at a safe distance. Today, its front yard is scenic Gantry Plaza State Park, a riverfront recreational area with 12 acres of gardens, piers, athletic courts, and one more restored piece of the area's industrial past. Namesake gantries, originally used to load and unload rail cars from barges, are the perfect complement for the historic Pepsi-Cola sign on the far end of the park.
Whether you want to live behind the Pepsi-Cola sign or find your next family home somewhere else on Long Island, our real estate team at Coach REALTORS® can help. Contact us to learn more about buying or selling a home here in New York.

There's nothing like New York City excitement. NYC has 24/7 art, culture, and entertainment, but sometimes you just need a moment of peace. Our real estate agents recommend Gantry Plaza State Park. It's a city oasis in Long Island City that's close enough for you to enjoy a moment of peace and get right back to the action.
Gantry Plaza State Park is a peaceful green space that's perfect for a mid-city escape. The 12-acre park curves along the banks of the East River in Long Island City, Queens. Since its opening in 1998, the developers have transformed the park in stages to include activities and facilities for everyone.
Gantry Park offers traditional park amenities in a city setting. You'll find spaces for picnicking, organized sports, evening concerts and more. You can follow the curved steps down to the waterfront plaza. There you can sit quietly and look out over the river to a panoramic New York City skyline view. If you bring your fishing gear, you can claim a spot along one of four piers and cast your line into the river.
The park's location was once an abandoned dockyard and industrial site. Instead of tossing aside its past, Gantry Plaza State Park honors its once-thriving industrial roots. Two refurbished gantries give the park its name and a historical focal point. The structures were built in 1925 to help dock workers unload goods from railway cars and load them onto New Jersey-bound barges.
The bright red, four-story Pepsi-Cola neon sign is a national landmark and an essential element of Gantry Park's personality. The original sign was placed on top of the company's bottling plant in 1940. After decades of transitions and deterioration, Pepsi reproduced the sign in 1993. Despite the reproduction sign's young age, the Landmarks Preservation Commission gave it landmark status.
The Pepsi-Cola sign and the gantries are unmistakable waterfront landmarks. Together, they make Gantry Park stand out when viewed from either side of the river.
Gantry Park is a great location for families that want a park with more than a fabulous view. There's pier fishing, Adirondack chairs for lounging, and picnic tables for casual outdoor dining. The playgrounds provide child-friendly fun, and the park's playing fields are available for organized sports.
Gantry Plaza State Park hosts a schedule of events and concerts. Visit the New York Parks website for information on Fishing Fridays, Live at Gantries, and other upcoming events.
As with most New York State Parks, Gantry Plaza State Park visitors must pay a vehicle access fee. If you have an Empire Pass card, you qualify for entrance to Gantry Park, other New York State Parks, and State Department of Environmental Conservation venues.
When you schedule a group picnic, you must pay a fee based on the number in the group. You must apply for a permit to conduct a wedding photo shoot or other photo or video production. Teams must apply for a permit to use park playfields.
New York living can be exciting as long as you know the best places to go when you need to slow down. Our real estate professionals can help. Contact Coach REALTORS® when you're buying or selling a home in Long Island City or if you want to know more about the communities we serve.

While finding the perfect Long Island home for you is our priority at Coach REALTORS®, we also want you to discover all that the area has to offer. For a fun-filled day, our REALTORS® leave your cares behind and head out to Coney Island and Luna Park where adventure awaits in this iconic amusement venue which was inspired by the original 1903 park.
Coney Island is legendary, in part because of its history as the place to go for a day of fun, food, and thrills. With the original Luna Park being one of three amusement parks established in the early twentieth century on Coney Island, its newer namesake embodies all the excitement of years gone by with modern touches and attractions. Although the original park was devastated by fire in 1944, visitors will find that today's Luna Park and Coney Island are reminiscent of its glorious past. The Parachute Jump ride--once nearly everyone's favorite--is no longer in service, but the attraction still stands, now covered in thousands of LED lights. The new Thunderbolt coaster pays homage to the classic wooden coaster that served up thrills to park guests for decades, and visitors of all ages will delight in riding the beautifully restored B & B Carousell.
For guests who are looking for over-the-top thrills, Luna Park makes the grade with rides like the Coney Island Cyclone, Zenobio, and the Sling Shot. Feel the wind in your face as you take a ride on the Steeplechase, another of the park's classic thrill rides with ties to its past, and get your adrenaline pumping as you climb aboard the Coney Clipper. If less intense attractions are more your taste, rides like the Circus Coaster and Lynn's Trapeze are sure to please. Younger riders will love the Mermaid Parade and Speed Boat rides. At Luna Park, you'll also find plenty of midway type games that bring back the nostalgia of a summer carnival. Try your luck at one or all, and bring back a fun prize as a souvenir.
All the excitement you'll find at Coney Island's Luna Park might cause you to work up an appetite. You'll find plenty of mouthwatering treats throughout the park from savory and satisfying to refreshingly sweet. Enjoy delicious seafood offerings at Place to Beach, and don't miss the original Feltman's of Coney Island for the ultimate hot dog experience. Cool down with a creamy scoop from Coney's Cones or indulge with a treat from Fried Delights. You'll make so many great memories when you spend the day at Luna Park, and Thunderbolt Retail captures them in photos that you can take with you. Purchase souvenirs and trinkets at the Cyclone Shop and Last Stop Coney Island to remember your day.
Treat yourself and your family to a day of fun that you'll long remember. Coney Island and Luna Park are sure to become a favorite destination on Long Island.
