May 6th is National Space Day. What better way to celebrate than by checking out the tremendous innovations in space exploration we've made over the years? Or by experiencing the beauty of space for yourself? There are great options to do both right in your new neighborhood.   The Cradle of Aviation Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am-5 pm. Tickets are $21 for adults 13 and up, or $19 for children and seniors. There are also private bookings available for parties and other events.
  
  
• The Vanderbilt's Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium - 180 Little Neck Rd., Centerport, NY 11721
  The Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium is part of the Vanderbilt Museum. It provides a variety of different shows and events to teach children and adults alike about the wonders of space. Open Friday through Sunday, there's an ever-rotating schedule of daytime and evening shows, plus live lectures on the stars and planets.
  
  Current shows include Stars, narrated by Mark Hamill, about the birth, life, and death of everything from pulsars to black holes, and Dynamic Earth, which explores the oceans, atmosphere, climate, and more. Plus, the Vanderbilt Planetarium is also playing One World, One Sky, the Sesame Street-helmed exploration of the stars.
  
  The planetarium even has a rooftop observatory, where visitors can get a guided tour of the real night sky via their powerful Meade reflecting telescope. The observatory is open every Friday night, and, as it happens, National Space Day falls on a Friday.
  
  Plus, if you like to hike, you might check out the Solar System Hiking Trail, a mile-long loop that includes a scale model of the solar system. Hikers start at the sun and walk around to all eight planets. Note that the trail is only for experienced hikers.
  
  Daytime shows are $16 for adults, $15 for students and seniors, or $13 for children under 12. Evening shows are $10 for adults, $9 for students and seniors, or $8 for children. There are also laser shows featuring a dazzling display of flashing, colorful lights set to music.

1. Heckscher State Park- Heckscher Parkway Field 1, East Islip, NY 11730
   Cycle the 4.5-mile flat trail for a panoramic view of Great South Bay. Watch for the nests of ospreys, a sea hawk, that tower over the park campground, and over the trail near Field 7. This 1600-acre former 19th-century estate also shelters white-tail deer and a variety of other birds. 2. Eisenhower Park - Merrick and Stewart Avenues, East Meadow, NY 11554

Our REALTORS® are seeing more homeowners enjoy the benefits of a backyard fire pit.  Gathering around a warm fire with your family is an excellent way to spend an evening. When using a fire pit, safety should always be your priority. 

Backyard Fire Pit Safety

Whether you already own a fire pit or getting ready to install one, precautionary measures are necessary for your safety.  

• Permanent or Portable: When installing a fire pit, you must choose the best option for your backyard. You can easily customize a permanent fire pit to match the rest of your landscape theme. Installing a permanent fire pit ensures you are following all the safety measures with each use. Generally, steel or cast iron, a portable fire pit, is convenient for moving from one location to another. The downside is continuously checking your surroundings to ensure a proper area for using the fire pit.
  
  
• Location: Place the fire pit at least 10 feet away from your home, any other buildings, fencing, and your neighbor's yard. For the best safety measure, consider placing your fire pit 25 feet from any structures. Also, do not place the fire pit under your covered porch, awning, or tree branches.
  
  
• Patio Blocks: When positioning your fire pit, surround the area with patio blocks, concrete, or other non-flammable surfaces for extra protection. Keep the fire pit away from any type of wooden deck or porch.
  
  
• Clear the Area: When setting up your fire pit, clear the surrounding area of any vegetation, branches, or other flammable materials. Consider packing stones or dirt around the fi pit to contain the fire.
  
  
• Dig Down: When digging out the area for your fire pit, go down at least six inches and two feet across. Following these guidelines will help keep the fire and embers in a centralized location. If you do not dig down, the fire could quickly jump over the outer edge and create damage.
  
  
• Position Chairs:  Keep your chairs or benches back away from the fire pit. You want enough legroom to quickly get up and move about without getting too close to the fire.
  
  
• Watch Children and Pets: When sitting around the fire pit, always watch your children and pets. Do not leave them unsupervised by the fire. Following the 3 feet, away rule is always a good measure.
  
  
• Be a Weather Watcher: The weather can change quickly. Know the direction of the wind before you light the fire. Keep your smartphone around to check any weather updates.
  
  
• Fire Prevention: From the change in weather to a hot burning flame, keeping the fire under control is essential. Prepare for emergencies every time you light a fire. Keep a bucket of water on hand, invest in a fire extinguisher, or purchase a fire blanket to cover the entire pit immediately.
  
  
• Extinguish Your Fire: Before heading indoors for the night, make sure the fire is completely out. Use a bucket of water, spray with the garden hose, or cover with dirt.

Creating a time capsule is an absorbing and rewarding activity that pays dividends now and later. Use these helpful suggestions to start a creative project involving the whole family.

1. Make It Personal
   Traditional time capsules tend to focus on historical context, with documents and artifacts that objectively depict events of the time. While such items can certainly be part of your time capsule, the primary purpose is to relate each family member's personal experience during the COVID-19 quarantine.
   
   
2. Limit Technology
   It's tempting to use the convenience of flash drives, DVDs, and other digital storage. While improvements in technology are largely a good thing, they come so quickly that storage forms can be outdated by the time you're ready to open the capsule. Stick to hard copies of photos and writings wherever possible.
   
   
3. Document Your Surroundings
   Our world has temporarily shrunk to include only our immediate surroundings, which is your home, and what you can see from the windows. Draw a diagram of your neighborhood or print a picture off Google Maps. Add as much as you can about who lives where and what your interaction is with them. Also include detailed photos of your home, both exterior and interior.
   
   
4. Make Lists
   There's a reason "listicles" are so popular in online media. They're easy to read while still imparting a lot of information. Stay-at-home provides almost an endless selection of topics to build lists around. Possible choices include TV shows and movies you've watched, games you've played, new recipes you've tried, and books you've read.
   
   
5. Include Meaningful Mementos
   Newspapers and magazines are great inclusions to give a global perspective of events, but be sure to include items that are relevant to you and your family. Consider options such as a toilet paper roll (empty, of course), face mask, wrappers from favorite snack foods, and locks of hair from each family member (including pets!).
   
   
6. H Is for Homework 
   Homeschooling has become the rule instead of the exception. Include copies of reports, math problems, spelling quizzes, and other examples of schoolwork your kids have done so they can recognize their accomplishments. 
   
   
7. Say It in a Letter
   Are you or your kids unsure where to start? Writing thoughts down in the form of a letter makes it easier to maintain a casual, conversational tone. Address the letter to a friend, another family member, or your future self.
   
   
8. Look Ahead
   What do you see happening one year, five years, or 10 years down the road? Have each family member write down their predictions for the future. Everybody can have fun giving their imaginations free rein, and you can look forward to finding out whether any of the dreams become reality.
   
   
9. Set an Opening Date

This year, the four-day event will feature over 400 up-and-coming musical artists from a variety of genres including rock, alternative, pop, hip-hop, folk, jazz, reggae, blues, country, and more!

4 Days of Entertainment at Montauk Music Festival

MMF kicks off on Thursday, May 16th with an opening party at The Montauk Yacht Club from 7 p.m. to midnight. For the next three days, visitors will be able to choose from a variety of free concerts at over 40 different venues throughout the city.

On Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., there will also be open-air concerts at the Montauk Lighthouse. Grab a blanket, some chairs, and your family and friends, and plan to spend the day there. There will be food, soda, and alcoholic beverages for sale as well as a variety of interesting vendors including a pop-up store for Rudy's Custom & Vintage Guitars. You'll also find a variety of workshops and exhibitions at the Ocean's Institute located at the foot of the lighthouse. 

"Ask the Experts" Event

If you're an aspiring musician or are interested in getting a behind-the-scenes look into the music industry, you won't want to miss the "Ask the Experts" event on Friday, May 17th. It will be held at the Lighthouse from noon until 5 p.m. Last year's event included yoga, one-on-one mentoring sessions with the artists, an industry panel, a group listening session, and a wellness workshop. When the 2019 schedule is released, it will be updated on the MMF Ask the Experts page. 

Getting to MMF

Depending on where you're coming from, your best transportation options may be the Hampton Jitney, Long Island Railroad, or the Hampton Hopper free shuttles. The Montauk Yacht Club is located at 32 Star Island Road, and the Montauk Lighthouse is located at 2000 Montauk Highway.  

Although the open-air concerts are free, those going to the outdoor concerts will have to pay for museum admission. The cost for all three days is just $11 for adults, $8 for senior citizens, and $6 for children. The full admission price goes towards supporting the lighthouse, and your ticket also gives you the opportunity to tour the museum and climb to the top of the 200-year-old lighthouse.

2. Easter Kids Party Cruise: Skyport Marina | 2430 FDR Drive, New York, NY 10010
   Kids and parents will both enjoy the Easter Kids Party Cruise hosted by the Easter Bunny himself! With six different cruise times over Easter weekend, you'll have plenty of opportunities to catch this not-to-be-missed event.
   
   Enjoy two stories of music and family fun featuring face painting, clowns, balloons, dancing, and a magic show. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door if they're still available. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase.

3. Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival: 5th Avenue from 49th to 57th Streets
   The annual Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival is a New York City tradition that stretches back to the 1870s. This loosely-formed parade is different than what you'd expect from a traditional NYC parade. Instead of fancy floats, here you'll find "paraders" marching down the streets dressed in all kinds of themed costumes and Easter bonnets. There are also always plenty of costumed pets.
   
   The parade begins at 10 am and continues until around 4 pm on Easter Sunday. The route goes right past St. Patrick's Cathedral, which is one of the best viewing spots. Since this is an informal event, you might even want to don your best bonnet and join in on the parade!

4. Easter Kid's Disco and Egg Hunt: Doha Nightclub | 38-34, 31st Street, Long Island City, New York 11101
   Perfect for the little ones and their parents, the Easter Kid's Disco and Egg Hunt at Doha nightclub is an Egg-citing good time! From 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 20th, your kids will get to meet the Easter Bunny while enjoying plenty of music and dancing, face painting, a magic show, and, of course, tons of candy! 5. Frances Fleet
   Pilot whales, Finbacks, False Killers, Humpbacks, and Minkes are just some of the things Frances Fleet will take you to see. They have a stellar success rate spotting whales on tours running from the end of June through September 1.

   The whales who make the area home are part of a rich and diverse ecosystem. About Gantry Plaza State Park

Gantry Plaza State Park is a peaceful green space that's perfect for a mid-city escape. The 12-acre park curves along the banks of the East River in Long Island City, Queens. Since its opening in 1998, the developers have transformed the park in stages to include activities and facilities for everyone.

Gantry Park offers traditional park amenities in a city setting. You'll find spaces for picnicking, organized sports, evening concerts and more. You can follow the curved steps down to the waterfront plaza. There you can sit quietly and look out over the river to a panoramic New York City skyline view. If you bring your fishing gear, you can claim a spot along one of four piers and cast your line into the river.

A Historic Industrial Past

The park's location was once an abandoned dockyard and industrial site. Instead of tossing aside its past, Gantry Plaza State Park honors its once-thriving industrial roots. Two refurbished gantries give the park its name and a historical focal point. The structures were built in 1925 to help dock workers unload goods from railway cars and load them onto New Jersey-bound barges.

The bright red, four-story Pepsi-Cola neon sign is a national landmark and an essential element of Gantry Park's personality. The original sign was placed on top of the company's bottling plant in 1940. After decades of transitions and deterioration, Pepsi reproduced the sign in 1993. Despite the reproduction sign's young age, the Landmarks Preservation Commission gave it landmark status.

The Pepsi-Cola sign and the gantries are unmistakable waterfront landmarks. Together, they make Gantry Park stand out when viewed from either side of the river.

Outdoor Fun & Recreation

Gantry Park is a great location for families that want a park with more than a fabulous view. There's pier fishing, Adirondack chairs for lounging, and picnic tables for casual outdoor dining. The playgrounds provide child-friendly fun, and the park's playing fields are available for organized sports.

Park Fees

As with most New York State Parks, Gantry Plaza State Park visitors must pay a vehicle access fee. If you have an Empire Pass card, you qualify for entrance to Gantry Park, other New York State Parks, and State Department of Environmental Conservation venues.

When you schedule a group picnic, you must pay a fee based on the number in the group. You must apply for a permit to conduct a wedding photo shoot or other photo or video production. Teams must apply for a permit to use park playfields.
