Long Island: Catch a Glimpse of Space

Space Day on Long Island - Coach Realtors

May 6th is National Space Day. What better way to celebrate than by checking out the tremendous innovations in space exploration we've made over the years? Or by experiencing the beauty of space for yourself? There are great options to do both right in your new neighborhood. If you're looking at Nassau County homes for sale, you can pay a visit to the Cradle of Aviation Museum. Or if you're looking at Suffolk County homes for sale, you'll want to see the Vanderbilt Planetarium.

  • Cradle of Aviation Museum - Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, Garden City, NY 11530
Near these Garden City homes for sale, the Cradle of Aviation Museum is all about flight, from kites and hot air balloons all the way to the rockets that have taken us into space. Among the exhibits is a replica of the first liquid-fuel rocket ever built, the Goddard A-Series, in the 1920s.

Of course, not all the exhibits are just replicas. There are also a number of real space modules, such as the Rockwell Command Module 002, which flew to the moon and back in 1966, and the Grumman Lunar Module LM-13, built for the canceled Apollo 19 mission. There's also a Grumman Lunar Module simulator built to help astronauts prepare for the journey.

The museum also has a planetarium with a wide array of space shows and exhibits. There's an exploration of the night sky, a trip through the asteroid belt, an exploration of what humans' first mission to Mars will be like, and much more. Plus, go with Big Bird and Elmo on an exploration of the stars and constellations in One World, One Sky.

The Cradle of Aviation Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am-5 pm. Tickets are $21 for adults 13 and up, or $19 for children and seniors. There are also private bookings available for parties and other events.

  • The Vanderbilt's Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium - 180 Little Neck Rd., Centerport, NY 11721
The Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium is part of the Vanderbilt Museum. It provides a variety of different shows and events to teach children and adults alike about the wonders of space. Open Friday through Sunday, there's an ever-rotating schedule of daytime and evening shows, plus live lectures on the stars and planets.

Current shows include Stars, narrated by Mark Hamill, about the birth, life, and death of everything from pulsars to black holes, and Dynamic Earth, which explores the oceans, atmosphere, climate, and more. Plus, the Vanderbilt Planetarium is also playing One World, One Sky, the Sesame Street-helmed exploration of the stars.

The planetarium even has a rooftop observatory, where visitors can get a guided tour of the real night sky via their powerful Meade reflecting telescope. The observatory is open every Friday night, and, as it happens, National Space Day falls on a Friday.

Plus, if you like to hike, you might check out the Solar System Hiking Trail, a mile-long loop that includes a scale model of the solar system. Hikers start at the sun and walk around to all eight planets. Note that the trail is only for experienced hikers.

Daytime shows are $16 for adults, $15 for students and seniors, or $13 for children under 12. Evening shows are $10 for adults, $9 for students and seniors, or $8 for children. There are also laser shows featuring a dazzling display of flashing, colorful lights set to music.

It is also tax season, and many libraries are offering community tax clinics from now through mid-April. This may increase foot traffic and limit access. However, it's also a great opportunity to ask those last-minute tax questions you may have.

We invite you to contact us when you are ready to learn more about the homes we have for sale. It's our pleasure to tell you more about the communities we serve and help you find the perfect home for you and your family.

4 Days of Entertainment at Montauk Music Festival

MMF kicks off on Thursday, May 16th with an opening party at The Montauk Yacht Club from 7 p.m. to midnight. For the next three days, visitors will be able to choose from a variety of free concerts at over 40 different venues throughout the city.

On Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., there will also be open-air concerts at the Montauk Lighthouse. Grab a blanket, some chairs, and your family and friends, and plan to spend the day there. There will be food, soda, and alcoholic beverages for sale as well as a variety of interesting vendors including a pop-up store for Rudy's Custom & Vintage Guitars. You'll also find a variety of workshops and exhibitions at the Ocean's Institute located at the foot of the lighthouse.

"Ask the Experts" Event

If you're an aspiring musician or are interested in getting a behind-the-scenes look into the music industry, you won't want to miss the "Ask the Experts" event on Friday, May 17th. It will be held at the Lighthouse from noon until 5 p.m. Last year's event included yoga, one-on-one mentoring sessions with the artists, an industry panel, a group listening session, and a wellness workshop. When the 2019 schedule is released, it will be updated on the MMF Ask the Experts page

Getting to MMF

Depending on where you're coming from, your best transportation options may be the Hampton Jitney, Long Island Railroad, or the Hampton Hopper free shuttles. The Montauk Yacht Club is located at 32 Star Island Road, and the Montauk Lighthouse is located at 2000 Montauk Highway.

Long Island Easter Events for Your Family

Long Island Easter Events
Spring will be here before you know it, and that means warmer weather, blooming flowers, and, of course, the Easter Bunny! One of the things our real estate agents love about living in Long Island is that there are always so many family-friendly things to do, and celebrating Easter is no exception. Here's a rundown of some of the area's most popular Easter attractions.

  1. Long Island City Annual Egg Hunt and Festival: Gantry Park | 4-09 47th Rd, Long Island City, NY 10007
Head out to Gantry Park on Saturday, April 20th for the Long Island City Annual Egg Hunt and Festival. This event runs from 10 am until noon and features three separate Easter egg hunts to ensure that kids of all ages can have a safe and enjoyable experience.

Although the event is free, tickets are required and won't be sold that day, so make sure you go online and complete your registration!
  1. Easter Kids Party Cruise: Skyport Marina | 2430 FDR Drive, New York, NY 10010
Kids and parents will both enjoy the Easter Kids Party Cruise hosted by the Easter Bunny himself! With six different cruise times over Easter weekend, you'll have plenty of opportunities to catch this not-to-be-missed event.

Enjoy two stories of music and family fun featuring face painting, clowns, balloons, dancing, and a magic show. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door if they're still available. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase.
  1. Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival: 5th Avenue from 49th to 57th Streets
The annual Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival is a New York City tradition that stretches back to the 1870s. This loosely-formed parade is different than what you'd expect from a traditional NYC parade. Instead of fancy floats, here you'll find "paraders" marching down the streets dressed in all kinds of themed costumes and Easter bonnets. There are also always plenty of costumed pets.

The parade begins at 10 am and continues until around 4 pm on Easter Sunday. The route goes right past St. Patrick's Cathedral, which is one of the best viewing spots. Since this is an informal event, you might even want to don your best bonnet and join in on the parade!
  1. Easter Kid's Disco and Egg Hunt: Doha Nightclub | 38-34, 31st Street, Long Island City, New York 11101
Perfect for the little ones and their parents, the Easter Kid's Disco and Egg Hunt at Doha nightclub is an Egg-citing good time! From 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 20th, your kids will get to meet the Easter Bunny while enjoying plenty of music and dancing, face painting, a magic show, and, of course, tons of candy! There will also be a balloon egg hunt and a toy raffle.
  1. Spring Fun Hunt at Wantagh Park:  Wantagh Park Children's Playground | 1 King Rd, Wantagh, NY 11793
On Sunday, April 14th, the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual Spring Fun Hunt at Wantagh Park. Bring your little ones to meet the Easter Bunny and search for over 4,000 hidden eggs. There will also be treats, raffles, and more. This popular community event is always a hit!

In addition to answering questions about Long Island real estate, our real estate agents are frequently asked about when, where, and how to see our whales. The whales make the area their home from early July and often stay well into September. This means that there are plenty of opportunities for your family to head out on the water to get up close and personal with these creatures.

  1. Coastal Research & Education Society of Long Island (CRESLI)
CRESLI operates one- and two-day tours around Montauk from July through Labor Day. They boast an impressive 92% success rate in finding whales and their Viking Fleet is among the best in the region. In addition to the Humpbacks, Finbacks, and Minke whales, you will see plenty of sea turtles, birds, and dolphins frolicking in the surf.

  2. American Princess Fleet
Operating out of Riis Landing, Rockaway in Queens, the American Princess Fleet offers tours from early May through September. The fleet has served the New York region for nearly a decade and their four-hour adventure cruises are highly regarded. They frequently find everything from Gannets flying overhead to schools of fish looking for their next meal.

  3. The Starlight Fleet
Starlight, star bright, we want to see a whale tonight! If you say that to yourself the night before your cruise, there is a good chance your wish will come true with The Starlight Fleet. The company takes great pride in offering some of the most educational trips around, and each tour is led by a marine biologist. This means that you can learn anything and everything you have ever wanted to know about some of the most magnificent creatures in the ocean. Best of all, if you don't see any whales on your trip, they often offer free second trips so that you don't leave Long Island disappointed.

  4. Cape May Whale Watcher
Cape May is a popular location for whales to swim about. They love the calm waters and plentiful food within the area. This makes it a great place to spot fins and blowholes passing through the water on a tour with Cape May Whale Watcher. Every now and then whales fluke, humpbacks breach, and bottlenose dolphins swim around the boat trying to get a closer look at the people trying to get a closer look at them.

  5. Frances Fleet
Pilot whales, Finbacks, False Killers, Humpbacks, and Minkes are just some of the things Frances Fleet will take you to see. They have a stellar success rate spotting whales on tours running from the end of June through September 1.

  6. Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research
The whales who make the area home are part of a rich and diverse ecosystem. The team at the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research works hard to protect and conserve the many species that call the area home. After your whale watching tour, it's a great place to stop in and see how they care for the seals, dolphins, and sea turtles that share the waters offshore with their larger whale cousins.

Before you go on any of these adventures, be sure that you pack sunscreen, a hat, binoculars, and a reliable camera. If you are prone to seasickness, you will also want to pack some medication just in case.

When the boat docks, be sure to contact us to learn more about the properties we have available. Our agents will be happy to help you move into the area so that you can see these beautiful creatures as often as you'd like.
