Tips for Starting a Spring Garden on a Budget - Howard Hanna | Coach Realtors

Spring gives you a chance to make your outdoor area into a great garden without spending too much. Our REALTORS® have put together these cost-effective gardening ideas to help you build a nice and lasting garden that makes your home look better and saves you money.

  • Grow from Seeds
Start your garden by growing plants from seeds instead of buying grown plants. Get good seeds from trusted sellers and plant them inside near a bright window or under cheap grow lights. This way can save you lots of money while letting you control your plants from the start, and many veggies like tomatoes, peppers, and herbs grow from seed.
  • Make Your Own Compost
Turn kitchen leftovers and yard debris into rich compost for your garden. Set up a basic compost pile using dead leaves, cut grass, fruit and veggie peels, and used coffee grounds. This organic fertilizer will boost your soil health while cutting down on your need for store-bought additives, and you'll feel good knowing what's going into your garden soil.
  • Give New Life to Old Stuff
Use your imagination with containers and tools you already have around the house. Clean yogurt tubs work great as seed-starting pots, while old kitchen utensils can serve as garden markers. Empty milk jugs can be turned into watering cans, and cardboard egg cartons are ideal for starting seedlings. Even cracked terra cotta pots have a use as drainage material at the bottom of new containers.
  • Try Companion Planting
Boost your garden's productivity by pairing compatible veggies and flowers. This approach keeps pests away and helps plants grow better without pricey bug sprays. Put marigolds next to tomatoes to drive away bugs, or grow basil close to peppers to make them taste better. Think about making groups of plants that help each other grow and stay healthy, cutting down on the need for man-made solutions.
  • Team up with Neighbors
Get in touch with other gardeners near you to swap seeds, tools, and tips. Set up plant exchanges to add variety to your garden without spending extra money. A lot of seasoned gardeners don't mind giving away cuttings or splitting perennials, which means you get free plants and make friends in the gardening world. Look for local gardening groups on social media—they're great places to find plant-sharing opportunities and get advice on gardening.
  • Collect Rainwater
Set up a basic rain barrel system to catch and store rainwater for your garden. This eco-friendly method cuts down your water costs while giving your plants natural water without chemicals. Put barrels beneath downspouts and use the stored water when it's dry. Think about adding a simple drip watering system with cost-effective materials to make the best use of your collected water.
  • Pick Native Plants
Pick plants that grow naturally on Long Island to make a garden that's easy to take care of and doesn't cost much. Plants from the area do well in our weather, so they don't need as much water or care. These plants live longer and don't need as much upkeep over time, which saves money. Think about planting Black-eyed Susans, Purple Coneflowers, and grasses that grow well here.
